William Castle ( April 24, 1914 - May 31, 1977 ) was a director, producer and American film actor.
His real name was William Schloss , born in New York in a family of Jewish origin. Schloss means Castle ("Castle") in German, so probablement Castle and changed it into English for non-discrimination that artists receive Jews had to endure. He worked in theater and came to Hollywood 23 years, was also assistant Orson Welles.
Castle was famous for directing films with many new features, which ambitiously promoted, despite being typically low-budget titles of series B . Five of these productions were written by the novelist Robby White adventures. In later years, version two of his films House on Haunted Hill of 1959 (with Vincent Price) in 1999 and 13 Ghosts 1960 in 2001 (the last under the title Thirteen Ghosts ). He also did The Tingler 1959 with Vincent Price and a movie with Joan Crawford, called Strait - Jacket in 1964.
