Melayah

This dance comes from Alexandria, Egypt.

The Melayah is a long shawl or veil made of nylon or silk, in which women are completely wrapped from head to foot. It is a modest clothing that women wear before leaving home. For presentations in the theater takes melayah gold or silver ornaments. Leff word means wrapping or wrapped.

Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, all women, regardless of their status, the Melaya wore as a sign of respect and dignity, wrapping it around the body from head to toe. Today some women still carry it, but is falling into disuse.

As the city of Alexandria is a port, the dance is staged between fishermen and local women. Men sit next to a cafe, drinking and smoking their water pipes, and women compete for his attention by flirting. Finally, men and women dance together.

The costumes of the men is typical of the fisherman, which includes black pants, a sweater, a vest color and a white hat fisherman.
