Son of Edward John Pratt Jr and his third wife Sarah Elizabeth Millard the future actor was born in Camberwell, London, and grew up in Enfield.
Orphaned in his youth, he attended classes at Enfield Grammar School before moving to Uppingham School, Merchant Taylors' School, and occasionally at the University of London. The first me ta of Karloff was to join the diplomatic service, his brother Sir John Henry Pratt, became a famous and distinguished diplomat. In 1909, Pratt went to Canada, changing his name.
